What is a migration?
In order to improve our quality of service, we have chosen to move some of our infrastructure from the Interxion PAR6 (IX6) data center to our Tier IV certified data center, Aurora IVY 1.
For each hosting rack, we therefore planned to move the servers installed there to another rack in Aurora, during different migration sessions.

These interventions require the formation of 2 distinct teams:
-
The System team is in charge of preparing the servers, planning their shutdown and restart.
-
The Network team that takes care of disconnecting the equipment, loading it into the truck and transporting it to Aurora. This same team will then take care of the installation in the destination bay.
The steps of a migration
Step 1: Plan the intervention
First, we inventory all the servers that will be moved during the intervention and identify the customers who are likely to suffer disruptions in order to warn them in advance via an email.
At the same time, the destination bay is connected to the network and its equipment is configured.

Step 2: De-racking
While the Network team goes to IX6, the System team prepares to shut down all the servers involved in the migration. Once all the machines are shut down, the Network team unplugs them and takes them out of the source rack.
Then the machines are loaded on the truck and brought to Aurora.

Step 3: Racking
After unloading the machines from the truck, they are installed in the destination bay, reconnected to the network and turned back on.
Once accessible, the System team is in charge of ensuring that all managed services are functional.

Step 4: Cleaning
Once all services are restored, the two teams go around the data center to make sure that all equipment (cable ties, screws, etc.) is neat and tidy.
