This message means that the connection attempt of your SSH client has been refused by the server. There are several possibilities, here are the most frequent ones:

  • Either no SSH server is listening on the destination port (usually port 22);
  • Either an automatic blocking system (like fail2ban) has banned you for a few minutes after too many connection errors.

Solution

In the first case, you should contact your IT manager to describe the problem. It is possible that the SSH server is not working, not well, or that you do not have the right connection information.

In the second case, the easiest thing to do is to wait about 15 minutes before trying again. If it still doesn't work, your infomanager will know how to correct the situation, so you should contact him and perform live connection tests.

For any other error message, we advise you to contact your IT manager and send him a copy of the error message. If possible, try adding at least one level of verbosity (-v parameter of the SSH command) to give him more information.
